We are three legal experts passionate about conservation who believe new approaches can finally make a difference for the planet. Aware of the urgent need for change, we came together in 2021 to explore innovative legal and policy solutions building on our joint experience and knowledge.

Léa Badoz

After obtaining her Master’s in International and European Environmental Law in 2017, Léa has worked with environmental organisations such as IUCN and BirdLife on various environmental issues ranging from mangrove governance to wildlife crime. Aware of the necessity to align policy and science, she is completing an MSc in Wildlife Biology and Conservation. She is interested in finding innovative solutions to change mindsets and promote conservation as a condition for successful progress and development in the respect of all life. Besides, she likes to explore new ways to communicate complex legal ideas and is developing her skills in communications, marketing and design.

Léa lives in Germany and loves to get out to contemplate local wildlife on her free time. She travels the world to observe wild species and even volunteered against poaching in South Africa and in a rehabilitation center for wild animals in Costa Rica.

Lorena Martínez Hernández

Lorena is motivated to find practical solutions to the planetary crisis. She has extensively studied the law on foreign investments and has proposed legal norms to increase investments flows towards ecosystem conservation. She is interested in leveraging actions for ecosystem restoration, climate change mitigation and adaptation and biodiversity protection.

She has experience working at government agencies, international NGOs and academia. After completing her Bachelor degree in Law, she worked for the Federal Attorney Office for Environmental Protection in Mexico conducting environmental law enforcement procedures. 

She completed an LLM in Environmental Law and worked as research staff at Universitat Rovira i Virgili. She has performed as legal officer at the International Union for the Conservation of Nature, fostering the development of legal frameworks in Latin America to support effective water governance and adaptation to climate change.
Lorena is a very social person. She loves to spend time with her friends at the beach in Tarragona and she has volunteered for "Amics de la Gent Grand" to combat solitude of aged persons. She likes to cycle from town to town along the Rhine, to walk in the forest and the feeling of the sea-waves.

Lydia Slobodian

Languages: English (native); Portuguese (working); Spanish (basic); German (basic)

 

With more than ten years of experience in conservation and sustainable development, Lydia is passionate about identifying and taking advantage of leverage points for change.  She has supported development of environmental policy and legislation around the world, and publishes on a wide range of topics including virtual water, intergenerational equity, forest governance and synthetic biology. 
 Prior to L4Earth, Lydia worked as Senior Legal Officer for IUCN, where she engaged with international processes under the Convention on Biological Diversity and the Framework Convention on Climate Change and led the IUCN delegation to the intergovernmental conference on marine biodiversity in areas beyond national jurisdiction.

Lydia holds an MA and MPhil from the University of Cambridge and a JD from Georgetown University, where she teaches as an adjunct professor of law.  She is a member of the District of Columbia Bar Association.
